Overview
Upaniṣadic contemplation joins receptive study, reflective reasoning, and sustained contemplation in an inquiry into self and ultimate reality.
Purpose. The sequence aims to turn a received teaching into understood and assimilated knowledge rather than relying on recitation alone. Nididhyāsana is the sustained contemplative operation within this broader sequence, not a synonym for the entire process.
Characteristic operations
- Hear the teaching: Receive an Upaniṣadic instruction through study or guidance.
- Reflect on it: Use reasoning to clarify its meaning and answer conceptual doubt.
- Contemplate it: Sustain attention to the teaching beyond discursive restatement.
- Test assimilation: Examine whether the understanding changes how self and world are apprehended.
