Overview
Logical Positivism (the Vienna Circle) held that a statement is meaningful only if it is either analytically true (true by definition) or empirically verifiable. By this criterion, metaphysics, theology, and ethics are literally meaningless — not false, but devoid of cognitive content. Though the movement's strict verificationism was eventually abandoned, its emphasis on rigor profoundly shaped analytic philosophy.
Key ideas
- Verification Principle: A non-tautological statement is meaningful only if there is some possible observation that would verify or confirm it. 'The Absolute is perfect' fails this test.
- Elimination of Metaphysics: Traditional philosophical questions (Does God exist? What is the essence of Being?) are not false but meaningless — they violate the conditions for cognitive significance.
- Unity of Science: All genuine sciences share a common language and method. The distinctions between physics, biology, and psychology are practical, not fundamental.
