Justice requires treating persons as equals, so that an inequality in benefits, opportunities, or burdens stands in need of justification to those it disadvantages.

Overview
Egalitarianism is the family of positions holding that justice requires treating persons as equals. It does not by itself hold that every inequality must be removed; what it requires is that an inequality be justifiable to the people it leaves worse off.
