Overview
Deconstructive reading follows a text's oppositions, exclusions, and unstable terms to show where its operation unsettles its apparent claims.
Purpose. The method reveals dependencies that a text's stated hierarchy tries to suppress. It neither assigns any meaning one wishes nor simply reverses an opposition, and it remains distinct from Deconstruction as a historical movement.
Characteristic operations
- Locate a governing opposition: Identify paired terms whose hierarchy organizes the text.
- Follow the dependence: Show how the privileged term relies on what it excludes or subordinates.
- Read tensions closely: Track passages where the text's operation works against its explicit claim.
- Displace the hierarchy: Recast the opposition without treating a simple reversal as the final result.
